EXCERPT:

I spotted Roxy and her blue glasses toward the back of the busy restaurant. The walkways between the booths were crowded with racing kids covered in sticky jelly and older people trying to rein them in as I made my way toward them.

Roxy’s hair was pulled up in a messy bun and her eyes squinted as she glanced up at me. “You seriously went running before you came here. You weren’t lying.”

“Nope. I try to run every day.” I sat beside Katie, who compared to Friday night was dressed down in a baby blue off-the-shoulder sweater that looked like sequins had thrown up on it. Her blond hair was pulled back in a low ponytail at the nape of her neck. “I have to work out,” I explained, placing my purse between Katie and me. “I eat like five starving guys in college. It’s actually embarrassing how much food I can consume in one sitting.”

Katie laughed. “I don’t have that problem. I can eat whatever I want and not gain a pound. Actually, I’d probably lose weight.” Her shoulders rose in a shrug. “Sucks to be you all.”

Roxy scowled at her. “You don’t need to rub it in, you know.”

“Don’t hate me because I was born this way.” Katie grinned when Roxy rolled her eyes. “Maybe it’s Maybelline. Maybe it’s Katie.”

I giggle snorted.

The waitress appeared at our table, clicking the pen she’d pulled out of the pocket of her apron. She took our drink order and then dashed off to fulfill it, her white sneakers squeaking across the floor.

“I’m glad you came,” Roxy said, propping her elbows on the table. “I was worried I was going to have to search you down and force you to come eat with us.”

I laughed again. “I’m pretty sure you’d have a hard time doing that.”

“I’m scrappy.” Roxy grinned. “I could take you.”

Thinking of the shiner I’d first seen her with, I decided she was probably telling the truth. “I’m glad you guys invited me.” I paused while the waitress returned with our drinks before disappearing again, then I said, “So, I know Roxy works at the bar, what about you, Katie?”

“At the club across the street from Mona’s.” Katie dumped a packet of sugar into her coffee and then picked up five more, managing to rip the tops off in one impressive swipe. “It’s a strip club.”

“Oh.” How had I not noticed a strip club across the street from Mona’s?

Katie dumped the sugar in her coffee. “I strip. I don’t dance. I take my clothes off for a living and get paid damn good money for it, too.”

I blinked. “That’s cool.”

Her gaze turned shrewd. “You don’t have a problem with that?”

“Um, not if you don’t.” I glanced at Roxy, who was busy cleaning her glasses, a small smile pulling at her face. I picked up my soda and took a deep drink.

Katie tilted her head to the side, studying me. “Really?”

I lifted a shoulder. “Nope. Honestly. I think it’s pretty cool you have the lady balls to do it.”

A slow grin appeared. “You should do it. You’d make so much money. Hell, I’d pay to see you—”

“Katie,” sighed Roxy, resting her chin in her hand. “Stop trying to recruit rookie strippers. You do this every time you meet someone. No one has agreed yet.”

I grinned as I pictured the odd blonde roaming the city, looking for women who wanted to take their clothes off. “I don’t think I could do it. I’d get up there and then forget how to take my clothes off.”

“Taking your clothes off is the easiest part,” Katie replied seriously.

Roxy looked doubtful. “Those spandex running pants leave very little to the imagination. If I had your body, I’d walk around naked all day.”

“I have no problem getting naked when it’s—I don’t know, an intimate situation,” I announced, “but doing it in public is a different story.”

“That’s good to know,” the waitress said, pen in hand. “Do you guys know what you want to eat?”

“Awkward,” I murmured under my breath as my eyes widened.

And don’t miss the previous titles in the Wait for You Series!

Weekly Wrap-Up September 12th-18th

This week turned out to be very hectic(also Adventure Time is ruling my life), so I only got three books read. Two physical books; one a graphic novel and the other an ARC. Which means one e-book borrowed from my library.

One by Sarah Crossan ****
I should have already reviewed this. But life got in the way. So a review won't go up until I'm back from my trip; in about two(ish) weeks.

Saga Vol 5 by Brian K. Vaughan ****
The best graphic novel series most definitely. Although this volume was not as good as the previous four, I still really enjoyed it. I think this one was the lull before the storm. But now the series is on hiatus so I don't know how long I'll be waiting for volume six.

Dumplin' by Julie Murphy ****
So this was one really hyped up book before its release this week. And although I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was no blown away. I could definitely relate with Willowdean. Weight, insecurity and body issues are all something that we all feel. Some more than others. But I loved how body positive this book was. Willowdean was pretty secure in her body. But still showed how insecurities, especially when you start dating, can arise. All issues were dealt with in a really realistic and relatable way. My few issues were Willowdean's decision making at times(I know she's a teenager, but still). I didn't like how she handled or didn't handle Mitch and his feelings. It was kind of not wrapped up well. I also would have liked a bit more from the ending. I can see why that was a good place to end it. I didn't hate it. I just wanted more. But overall a fun, body positive read.

Top 5 Wednesday: Mental Health

Top 5 Wednesday is a meme started by Lainey at Ginger Reads Lainey. Find the list of all the #T5WFamily here.

This weeks topic is: Top 5 books that deal with mental health/illness.

I think that last year or so has really shown how far the publishing industry is advancing. We're seeing more and more diverse books, especially in YA. And the includes books the deal with very real and very tough subjects like mental health. I have found myself looking for those books as I want to get a better understanding and become more knowledgeable. I feel very ignorant when it comes to mental health as it has never touched my life in any way. So as they say, knowledge is power and what better way than through books. Even fictionalized books. Because I know a lot of these authors are writing a story based on their personal life.

5. All Bright Places

What I think All the Bright Places shows is just how scared we, as a society, are about recognizing the signs of someone needing help. There's a stigma surrounding anything to do with mental health and illness and All the Bright Places demonstrates that with parents who just don't want to have a "sick" son. So we best put it off as his quirkiness. It's really sad. But this book is brilliant.

4. The Last Time We Say Goodbye

The Last Time We Say Goodbye hits its readers right where it counts. I think Hand did a superb job of realistically portraying Lex's struggles with her brothers suicide. As well as the effects of Tyler's(Lex's brothers) depression and possibly misdiagnosed mental illness.

3. I'll Meet You There/Come Back to Me/This is One Moment

All three books deal with PTSD. Which I know has always been in our history but is only something that is more recently being taken seriously. As it should. In all three books PTSD is shown through veterans. I can't even being to imagine how to cope and overcome what the three fellas say well over seas. These books are emotional, truthful and fantastic reads.

2. Carry the Ocean

You guys, I get another chance to mention(push) this wonderful book. Like I've said and will keep saying Carry the Ocean is such a positive book. Although it has a character learning to live with depression and anxiety and another with autism, there was every change for this book to be heart breaking. And it really wasn't. There plenty of emotional pages. But in the end it warmed my heart.

1. Challenger Deep

I can't imagine a fiction book getting more personal then Challenger DeepShusterman provided a very real look at mental illness through Caden. I took something away from Challenger Deep. Learned something powerful. Caden was a great voice to help me empathize and realize just how encompassing the mind can be, even when we know somethings off.  I was able to see how someone like, Caden starts to spiral downward. How his mind is blurring the lines between reality and make believe. This is a hard book to read, but very powerful and one that should be read. Challenger Deep is very unique and vivid in the narrative. Very clever. It is also one I recommend constantly. It is a book that should be read.

Any books you would recommend me on mental health?

Weekly Wrap-Up September 5th-11th

This week I managed to read six books. Two were physical books. Four of them were e-books; one of those being an e-ARC. I also DNF'd a book.

After You(Me Before You #2) by Jojo Moyes *****
Me Before You is easily one of my favourite books. I read it years ago and it has still stuck with me. Lou touched me. Her relationship with Will was wonderful and sad. Will was still full of life and I wish he could have seen that. So hearing that there would be a sequel was bitter sweet. Of course I wanted to know how Lou and everyone else was getting on, but also it left me wondering if the sequel would tarnish the memories of Will, Lou and Me Before You?
Well I'm happy to say After You does not.
Like with Me Before You, After You is an emotional journey. One that everyone should experience for themselves without spoilers. So I won't say much except that After You deals with loss. It shows how moving on is different for everyone. It shows the impact Will left and that the ones that truly leave us are never truly gone. It shows Lou trying desperately to just figure this all out and trying to find herself again. It shows you never have to be alone. And more importantly After You once again proves you just gotta live. Just live.

Him by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy *****
Awwwww. This book was so adorable and hot. You may have noticed I'm getting more into M/M romance and I have to say that this one is now one of my favourites. It has hockey(Toronto hockey even), best friends falling for each other, cuteness, swoon, very LGBT positive, and just a great story. I'm so glad I caved and spent the $6 on the e-book. #noregrets

The Fate of Ten(Lorien Legacies #6) by Pittacus Lore ****
This series is a really fun, fast paced, adrenaline rush alien adventure. And The Fate of Ten was no exception. John and gang are really having to fight for their lives. I really enjoy these books. Although I did find this one to be kind of a filler, things happened and the plot progressed. It's just I didn't find the material covered warranted 400 pages to get it done. I know who writes this series and I realize it's all about the money. But this could definitely be a six book series. The seventh, and last book will definitely be one epic battle. It's just that battle could have taken place in this book. That being said, every book ends on one major cliff hanger. So another year of waiting I'll be doing.

Dearest Clementine(Dearest #1) by Lex Martin ****.5
Whoa. I was taken by surprise here. This book sucked me in straight away. Clementine is one of the strongest ladies I've read from in a long while. Super tough, sassy and independent. She has the emotional range of child and I could relate so much there. I don't get emotions. What are they? The romance was super hot and swoony. Talk about a good guy. Strong female friendships. Plus the added bonus of some mystery and suspense; which I was not expecting. The writing was effortless and flowed well with the smart dialogue. I cannot wait to pick up the rest of the series.

Dark Wild Night(Wild Seasons #3) by Christina Lauren ****.5
Okay, I did not think it was possible to top my love for Will Sumner. But it seems to have happened? I'm still all confused up in my brain. So much nerdy sexiness. #Loliver for the win. I am so happy that Christina Lauren re-wrote this book. I was not happy with the original synopsis. It seemed like the relationship between Lola and Oliver was non-existent and I would have missed that. Because their friendship was almost the best part. Super geeks. Lola is easily my favourite of Christina Lauren's ladies. Her need for quite spoke to me. And Oliver, good God. Talk about my ideal man. Sexy geek. He's hard to put into words and I'm sure a very fictional man, who I very much wish was real. He owns a comic book shop and looks like that(see below). Um, yes please! #Lolivers connection is sooo hot. Just my favourite book to date from these ladies.

Tidal by Emily Snow ***
Although enjoyable, Tidal was nothing special. And will probably turn out to be unmemorable. By the half way mark I was considering DNF'ing. I'd just read a really dull sex scene and it kind of just put me off continuing. But I did. And I'm glad that I did. Because I was really surprised how the conflict and there after went down. I figured it would be the same old after math; the falling out. But it wasn't and it was actually done pretty well. So even though Tidal was just okay. I'm happy I read it just for the last thirty pages or so.

3:AM Kisses(3:AM Kisses #1) by Addison Moore- DNF
Well that 23% of reading was super pleasant. If a whole bunch of superficial overly hormonal douchebags is pleasant to read about. Baya is clearly going to be out to prove to her overbearing hypocritical womanizing brother how not a good girl she can be. And why not do that with the brothers equally as slutty roommate who of course will have a dark past. Nah, I'm good. I especially don't need to read about the amount of times he touches her in a friendly manner yet she might be having a orgasm from that arm pat or squeeze. Ugh. Oh and how about the inconsiderate roommate of Baya's who I guess happens to be some sort of exhibitionist. Because the only bits of the roommate she's been acquainted with are her continually bouncing boobs(if you catch my drift). So save yourself the time and steer right on pass this bundle of joy.

The Murder Mystery Unfolds

By Claudia Ricci

Editor's note: This is a key chapter in the Sister Mysteries novel. (The book is now complete, and I am in the process of printing it out from the blog.) In this chapter, Sister Renata reveals that she and Señora found Antonie awash in his own blood after he took a razor to his throat. The chapter appears in the blog that contains the novel.

Renata's Diary

September 9, 1883 The time has come. That last chapter, and the one before, they unlocked the floodgates. There is blood on the floor, more blood than I have ever seen before. And there is more to come because, words,

words are like blood now, that dream, that last chapter, seems to have turned on a faucet, the truth comes pouring out of me. I see the words I have written, I read them here, and like magic, like magic the words make it all come back. IT CANNOT BE STOPPED, THE WARM FLOOD, THE BLOOD, I am a flood and THE BLOOD is all around me.

Here we are, Señora and me, kneeling, screaming, crying, our knees sliding in gore, our aprons soaked scarlet red. And poor Antonie, he lies here limp on the floor. Flooded in his own blood.

His face is drained almost as white as this piece of paper. His head drapes back at the horrific gash, Dear Mother of God, my cousin's throat is ripped one side to the other! His lips are bloody, his eyes wide and black and bugged out. He is gone. Gone. What have we done here? What have we done?

I wrote this chapter so many years ago I honestly can’t remember when. It’s been years -- 128 years since Antonie died, and a dozen or more years since I wrote this chapter. I know how it all happened. I know AS GOD IS MY WITNESS THAT I'M not to blame. I know THERE WAS NO CRIME. NO CRIME. None at all. I know how desperately we, Señora and me, tried to save him. I know too that I’m trapped here, inside this prison, chained at the ankle. Drained of energy. Staring out of that tiny barred window into the courtyard at the gallows where they plan to hang me in exactly 33 days.

Teresa visited me again last night, begged me once again to hand over to her this diary entry I hold in a pouch at my waist, right beside my rosary. It is the only diary entry that has never come to light.

The only one I refused to give up.

“Please, Renata,” she begged. “It’s your only hope. Just give it to me. She wants you to. Señora sent me here directly, she told me, just the way she told you, it’s time, it’s time. She cannot stand by, and let you hang for a crime that you didn’t commit.”

I sat here staring at Teresa. I felt the hard cold stone of this bench. I bit into my cracked lip. I tipped my head – no veil, no veil, no more nun's veil, I have just a brush of hair -- hacked short, cut away by that whiskey-drenched, toothless old jailer the other day – I tipped my head back to the clammy wall.

“All you need to do is give it to me, my dear dear heart,” Teresa whispered. She was standing now, now reaching her fingers through the bars, just the way my mother used to when I was a child, so many years ago, when I had pneumonia, and I was feverish and dreaming MACHINE DREAMS in the crib. “I will go immediately to see your lawyer, Deluria, I will bring him the diary. I KNOW that he will help you Renata. I know he will bring it to the court, he will file a last-minute appeal. I will stay until he does. But first you must give it to me. You must! Because if you don't Renata, you will..." Shaking her head slowly, she whispers.

"Just give it to me, please.

I stared at Teresa through the bars.

“If I do what you ask," I whispered, "what then will happen, what then will be my dear Señora's fate?"

“She is prepared,” Teresa said, stamping her foot.

“She has her faith in God and in Mary. She is not going to stand by to see you hang.”

I stared at Teresa through the bars. I shook my head.

I could not yield up the diary entry that might save me. If I did, I would have my freedom, but I would spend the rest of my days regretting my decision.

Top Ten Tuesday: Finished Series I Have Yet to Finish

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme held by The Broke and the Bookish.

This weeks topic is: Top ten finished series' I have yet to finish.

I feel like I'm the queen of not reading the last book in a series. Mostly it's because I feel like I should re-read the previous books. But a few times it's because I've stop caring. It's just one damn book and than I've got another finished series on my list. C'mon, Brittany, just get on it. That being said, I also have like a billion series' on the go. And plenty of them I've started(probably just first book read) that I need to make a priority to finish.

10. Monument 14

I have the last book, Savage Drift to go in this trilogy. I need to do a re-read before this happens.

9. Visions

Just Gasp to go in this trilogy. Although, I know it's from a different POV, so that's what has put me off.

8. Kingdom Keepers

I did start this last book in this seven book series when it first came out. But it was awful, so I put it aside and have yet to go back. This one is iffy. I don't know if I'll ever bother.

7. Chaos Walking

I have also started Monsters of Men a few years ago. And I do want to finish the trilogy, it's just my cousin said the ending made him so angry. So that's of putting.

6. Daughter of Smoke and Bone

I started this beast known as Dreams of Gods & Monsters upon its release. But than I decided I want to re-read the first two books. That's obviously not happened yet...

5. Sky Chasers

Here's the thing. This last book, Flame kept getting pushed back. So by the time it was released I had forgotten everything from the first two books. Which I really enjoyed. So another full re-read so I can finish the trilogy.

4. The Lumatere Chronicles

I adore this trilogy. So there should be zero excuses why I haven't read Quintana of Charyn yet. But there is. I waited impatiently for paperback release to read it. That was a year and a half ago. Now there's no way I can read this without doing a re-read. Sigh...

3. The Madman's Daughter

The audio books are fantastically creepy and gothic. So I decided to hold off on listening to A Cold Legacy until October.

And these last two are the top two series I have started and still have a few books to go. But they are priority and will be read this year.

2. Seven Realms series

Two and half books to go.

1. Defiance trilogy

Two books to go.
What are some series you need to finish?

Happy reading!

Weekly Wrap-Up August 29th-September 4th

This week I managed to finish six books. One physical book(my most anticipated book of life). And five e-books; two being e-ARCs and two being library books.

Black Rainbow by J.J. McAvoy **.5
I'm glad I got this one from the library. I was seeing great reviews from my Goodreads friends these past few months, so I had highish expectations. I wanted an intense forbidden student/teacher romance. And really it wasn't so much. The story was decent. Thea's past and the reason she's becoming a lawyer was good enough. Thea was a strong lady. But the writing, lack of stimulating dialogue and Levi really killed this one for me. Fell totally flat. I almost DNF'd. Levi was this super hard ass in the classroom and as some super scary lawyer. But outside of that he does 180 in his personality and is quite boring. I know McAvoy is a well loved author, so I'll eventually give her another go.

Fan Art by Sarah Tregay ****
After the reading brilliance that is Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda earlier this year, I was on the look out for something to compare(although nothing ever will). So Fan Art has been on my radar for months. I was just waiting for my library to get it in. So as soon as it did last week I grabbed it up. Fan Art had a rocky start for me. There was something missing in the dialogue and conversations. They felt a little off. And I didn't immediately click with Jamie. But once Jamie's hesitance with publicly coming out and than one day realizing he's falling for his best friend, Mason became the main focus I was hooked. Jamie was very relatable, even though I never faced his emotional struggles of being gay. His feelings were still very human. And his fight for something he believes, to essentially be himself was awesome. Plus the relationship between Jamie and Mason was sweet and adorable. I always say how I need more strong lady friendships. But really the same could be said for the guys. I just want a same sex friendship that is real and not fake. Although it's pretty obvious what would happen between the fellas; I was so shipping them. Definitely cute.

Trust the Focus(Focus #1) by Megan Erickson ****
Being in a M M romance mood, I decided to pick up something that has been on my Kindle for a while. Trust the Focus is another long harbouring feelings for my best friend romance. And I tend to really like those, and this one was no exception. I really liked how comfortable Justin and Landry were around each other. Being attached at the hip for over ten years really shows through in their relationship. Landry has always seemed confident in his skin. Being gay doesn't define him, he's just Landry. Justin finds himself jealous of that. He can't be himself or he thinks he can't. He's loved his best friend as more than a friend for years and it's sad that he felt he could never act on those feelings. As much as this is a romance it's also really about Justin becoming himself on the outside. He's dealing with loss, the pressure from his mother and pursuing his passion not his mothers expectations. Plus just growing up and learning to be confident in who you are no matter what everyone else will think. Good self discovery story, with a sweet romance.

Queen of Shadows(Throne of Glass #4) by Sarah J Maas *****
What am I supposed to say? I've waited over a year for this beast. And once again Maas has me feeling lost. She is the master destroyer of feels and she hit me once again. Throne of Glass is my series. If someone asks me my favourite series or for recommendation it will forever and always be Throne of Glass. The books continually get more intense and just everything(please excuse my lack of proper sentences). I would have punched the world if I was spoiled on anything to do with Queen of Shadows, so I won't say much; not that I can. I'm still trying to process life. Celaena is fucking fierce. She always has been but holy shit never have I wanted to be a fictional character so much. I want to be her. She's a phenomenal character. All the ladies are. Manon is still boss. And I knew their eventual "meeting" would be everything. Easily one of my favourite scenes. I did have some major grievances but that's mostly because my ship died. I knew it would but I was still holding out hope and will continue until I have read the last page of the series. I believed Maas and Celaena when she said she'd pick him and I was lied to. Lied to. My poor sweet guy. He just couldn't catch a break. Needless to say that I sobbed, laughed, raged(I uh may have had a lot of anger at certain bits), and just about any other feeling that one can feel I showcased. Queen of Shadows could possibly be my favourite of the series but it's a hard toss up between it and Crown of Midnight. I loved the ending. How it felt like the end but really felt like the beginning of the real meat of the story. It's going to be a long year. I guess it gives me time to try and put my soul and heart back together. Which let's face it will just die again when ACOTAR # 2 is released in the spring.

Flaw(Flaw #1) by Ryan Ringbloom **
Uh, there's not much to say here. Meh pretty much sums up my feelings. Besides the flat writing and even flatter characters, the change in the number of POV's did not work for me. What started as a dual POV with the two male MC's switched to the two female MC's POV's halfway through. It felt like I never got closure as it switched mid way in the story. And it also caused me to hate Jordyn. I thought she was alright, not even looking twice at Aidan's obvious scar. But once I got her POV and knew her feelings, her behaviour became despicable and I would never have forgiven her words. Aidan just kind of felt there. He was a good guy. I had no qualms against him. But his facial scar seemed to be his only purpose. Actually Josh turned out to be the best of the lot. Which is funny as he was this spoiled, immature asshole to begin with. And his 180 was believable and easily the only thing I really enjoyed about Flaw.

Books, Blogs & Reality by Ryan Ringbloom ***
Now this is a book written for book bloggers. Not to say a non-blogger wouldn't enjoy it. Just the us book bloggers would relate wholeheartedly with these characters. Especially heavy romance readers. This is a cute story about four ladies who have become fast internet friends through blogging and their similar taste in the books they read. It's really true how I talk and disclose more with my internet friends than people in my real life. These four ladies showcased how it doesn't matter how the friendship started. I concur. Some of my closest friends I have meet through blogging and books. As for the romance factor; I also agree that the lines between fictional romance and reality can blur. These four ladies definitely started to blur those lines. The book boyfriends, relationships and sex in our favourite romances are unfortunately not mirrored from real life. But I can imagine how one might confuse the two realities. I wouldn't mind living my favourite romance either. Books, Blogs & Reality spoke to my inner thoughts and wishes. It wasn't anything mind blowing. It was just a very quick fun read.
