To all the books I Failed to Review #1

This is exactly what you think it will be; me doing mini reviews of the books(mostly ARC's) I was too lazy to review fully and in a timely manner(well for the most part). And yes this post is numbered because let's be real, I'm lazy and no doubt I will need to do this again in the future.

Starflight by Melissa Landers
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Publication Date: February 2nd, 2016
Pages: 369
Series: Starflight #1

Starflight did a really good job of momentarily filling my Firefly shaped void. Space and a ragtag group of outlaws is epically my thing. And the added bonus of space pirates, yea you head me, just took Starflight to a new level of cool. Landers does a really good job of writing romantic sci-fi tales that leave me hungry for me. In this case the romance was both love to hate and slow burning. Come on, those two tropes are like made for each other. Solara is finally a YA heroine that isn't "secretly beautiful". She's a tough girl with a spunky personality and a skill set that is useful(I wish I could fix shit even a quarter as good as Solara). Doran is an entitled douchebag, but you know how it is, he learns that his money and charming personality won't always save him. Thus his better side starts to show and I couldn't help but be charmed by him. Eventually. Their banter really locks you in. It was both hard and easy to imagine that Starflight takes place over months. Both reading and the time in the book flew by and I think that's the best part. I loved being sucked into something so much that I have no concept of time. Starflight isn't totally about the world building; it's all about the cool cast of disheveled characters on board the Banshee going on an intergalactic adventure full of crazy schemes and action. I might have also been brainwashed into needing a sugar glider because ADORABLE.

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
Publisher: Tor
Publication Date: February 23rd, 2016
Pages: 512
Series: Shades of Magic #2
Source: ARC from publisher
Rating: 4/5

It's funny that this book can be both a good time and horrifying. Which is a total compliment. I feel like Schwab was trying to lessen her readers anxiety by throwing in a magical tournament. It was like the Twi-Wizard tournament on acid minus Voldmort ruining life. Because this world got enough problems without Voldmort. Anyhow, weird comparison...  Besides the obvious that carries over from book one, Lila being on a pirate ship was everything I wanted. Because you know what pirate ships bring? A captain my friends. And Brittany is like a moth to a flame when a character that dawns the title captain is involved. Alucard is like the missing puzzle piece to this series. He fits right in with his jagged edges full of secrets, intrigue and wit. Add in that "development" with Rhy and GIMMIE MORE. But it's not all about Alucard. Lila is certainly proving to be a force to be reckoned with. After book one I just knew she had so much more in store. And yup, that lady is truly kick ass in her troublesome ways. Can't say the same for Kell. He is withdrawing into guilt which is really isolating him. Loneliness hello thy name is Kell. He is constantly worried over Rhy's safety. And well he's not a happy guy. Rhy is pulling away from Kell. He's festering with resentment towards Kell. And really the toll in their relationship is spiraling downwards. A Gathering of Shadows is again ripe with coat porn and imagery of London(s). I ultimately was not surprised with the climax or some of the events. But that does not take away from the painful and nasty cliffhanger. Schwab is a cruel cruel human.

Undecided by Julianna Keyes

For a massive NA reader like myself it is absolutely the best feeling to find such a gem as Undecided through all the sameness that is out there now. Besides the obvious that is the characters(which I'll get to in a moment), the main thing Undecided has going for it is the lack of unnecessary drama. Yup, that's right. Just a college girl trying to find herself through mistakes and experience. Isn't that exactly how we learn to be ourselves? Nora is so easily relatable. It is pretty much impossible not to connect with her. Yea, she doesn't know exactly where she fits in but that sure doesn't mean she's lacking in the awesome department. Nora is witty, funny and down to earth. And than there's Crosbie. Which just YES. So much yes. He's my newest crush and boyfriend, so back off you fiends. Unlike Nora he was seen freshman year. But like Nora he's also trying to find himself through being a college kid. Crosbie is a sweet, hard working guy who has a thing for magic. Which apparently is super swoony. Guys, the banter. I LIKE. GREAT SUCCESS. Nora and Crosbie are the show, but that doesn't mean the cast of characters are lacking. They are all chalk full of personality. And absolutely none of the side stories get thrown to the wayside. There is closure. I love this book. I ate it as fast as I can devour a cake. And just like a cake, I need seconds and thirds and a billion more slices.

Dear Thing by Julie Cohen

Dear Thing turned out exactly how I expected it to be; messy adult drama. Romily essentially offers to become a surrogate for her best friend Ben and his wife Claire. The hitch, Romily has been in love with Ben for years. So although Romily might believe she's doing this help her friends have what they so desperately want, deep down it was never going to be quite that easy. Dear Thing is a story about feelings and how they develop and change. At least that's what I took from it. Ben and Claire both so desperately want to be parents but it turns out that the "normal" way is just not in the cards for them.Claire understandably feels done. Her body is tired. But Ben sees Romily as this savior of sorts. And Romily just wants to give back to two of the most important people in her life that helped her raise Posie(her daughter(she's a single mom)). As an outsider you can see where everyone's at and feeling; understand every side to this tricky triangle; Claire's resentment, Ben's rose coloured glasses, and Romily's evolving, let's call it predicament. Hurtful things are said, actions are misinterpreted, like I said so much mess. Posie is a great kid. She's an oddball and super intuitive. And kind of helps all the adults not to completely lose their minds. I also adore Jarvis and his roll. He acted so spot on for the situation. I was scared for a few pages that things were all going completely to hell. I most definitely would have thrown the book. Luckily no books were harmed. This time. I know I'm being some what vague, but I don't want to take away from the emotions that this book doles out. I will admit to having a bit of a disconnect, but that in no way kept me from feeling for all the characters.

You guys read these books? Thoughts?

Happy reading!

2016 Favourites Part 1

Like last year, I am going to do quarterly wrap-up's. It's a lot easier for me to do this since I read a lot. And I really want to be able to mention all my favourite books throughout the year. Which I can't really do with a best of list at the end of the year. Well not well enough anyhow.

This is wrapping up January 1st through March 31st.
Some stats:
Read: 65
Re-reads: 14
Genre most read: New Adult(not even close to being surprising)

So yes, good amount of reading being done. Really good books too. A good portion of the books I've read this year have been a 4 star or higher. And re-reads too. I am most certainly in a re-reading mood. Always love going back to my favourites. Especially my romance baes.

Let's get to it, not including re-reads, here are my most favourite reads from the first quarter of 2016.

Oh my God, Zeb you delicious man. My love for Built isn't just because of Zeb(though a lot is). I also really connected with Sayer, as we are both cold hearted. Zeb and Sayer are super hot and great together. But the surprise element that was added into Zeb's life, which also meant Sayer's really made this book beautiful and darling.

We Are the Ants is phenomenal in that it is essentially a potent yet subtle look at mental illness. It was poignant and smart; the aliens abducting Henry not only made him look at the world and consequences but also me as a reader was left with questioning society's worth too. All the characters are complex and the book is ripe with emotions.

I've read enough of Moyes books to expect the emotions but man this one can give Me Before You a shove. I sobbed like crazy person during Me Before You but this one was like every freakin' chapter. Such a beautiful heart wrenching story. Moyes can weave together different time lines and lives like no other. Wonderful.

Dean was totally everything I expected him to be with a bit more of special. He's that straight up gorgeous guy who loves the ladies. But he was never an ass about it. He likes sex. I thought he was great. Allie also now one of my favourite ladies. She carried herself really confidently. She was also firm but never rude when it came to arguments or discussions. I did not expect the story to take such a heart breaking turn. But it did, and in the end it really added some hardcore emotions and real life like moments to their relationship.

The Wedding made my little heart so happy. This whole book just made me happy. Just getting to re-visit this series in any way is something I love. But the Thorne novella? Aces, how can I marry the guy?

If you were even under the impression that a children's graphic novel about a dog and robot could be anything but emotional, you'd be wrong.

Is it every really a favourites list without JLA? Of course I loved this. It's Sethie. He's in more a spot than he was in the first book and I just want to pull him from the pages we reassure him that Josie has his back; so don't fuck it up.

It's more Will and Hanna. Obviously I adore this. I would read 20 more books of them just doing mundane everyday life well being their amazing selves. Seriously I would eat that up. One of my top OTP's. And Will Sumner is life.

Oh man, I was not prepared for the feels The Play brought. The first half of the book was great, but that second half, shit got real. I love Kayla and Lachlan. Super hot attraction between them. But Lachlan was my real love of the story; this dark, quiet beast of a man who turned out to be a sweetheart with a lot of demons. My heart, man it just wanted to hug him. And his love for dogs, hits me right in the ovaries.

Now, Wes and Jamie really are my everything. It was no surprise that I devoured Us upon it's release. Which than lead to me reading it two or three more days in the days to follow. You will see this book in my top 16 of 2016. No doubts there.

You guys you know my extreme love for Bad Romeo and Broken Juliet, well add Wicked Heart right in there. It's perfection. The tension between Lissa and Liam just drips off the page. It's hot. And the banter guys, soooo good. I want me a Liam as BF and a Lissa as a BFF. Gimmie!

It is the best feeling to find a new NA book to obsess over. Especially from an author that's new to me. And obsessed doesn't even begin to cover it. The story is on point. The writing most excellent. And the characters fantabulous. Nora is so freakin' relatable. And Crosbie is just YES. New book boyfriend, so back off you fiends. I saw him first. Mine.

Yes, I realize I need to really get some more variety in my life. But really NA/romance is where I am at. I adore it. So back off. I'd like to say expect a bit more genre diversity in the next quarter but well that would probably be a massive lie. #noregrets

(Belated) Weekly Wrap-Up March 12th-25th

These past two weeks I read eleven books. Five physical books and six e-books. Two being novella's/short stories. Three being re-reads. Two being e-ARCs.

Sustained(The Legal Briefs #2) by Emma Chase ****.5(re-read)
Re-read because a surprise new book is on its way about these two. YAY!!!

Half Bad(Half Bad #1) by Sally Green ****(re-read)
With the last book almost here, I of course needed to re-read so I can finish the trilogy.

Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell ****
This is such a fun story that any nerd can relate to. Obviously it's super relevant with Star Wars being life(even more so) now and for many years to come. But mostly I loved it because I would totally love to relive some historic events that I wasn't alive for or way to young. Or brings me back to the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings years. As is usual with Rowell, any short story she writes is amazing and all I want is it to become a full novel!

Collide(Blackcreek #1) by Riley Hart ***
Okay, Collide for the most part was a cute friends to lovers story. You know, my favourite kind. Although it was nothing special and the details are getting weaker by the day. I did have a problem with the amount of times faggot was dropped. And also the amount of intolerant men in the book. I know we are far from living in a world where everyone minds their own damn business, but come on, pretty much everyone in Cooper's life is using faggot for no reason except because they can. It was too much. And just made me angry. Besides that it was enjoyable.

Wicked Heart(Starcrossed #3) by Leisa Rayven *****
Review to come closer to release.

Half Wild(Half Bad #2) by Sally Green ****
I really think that this series deserves so much more love. It's clever and dark and really relevant to what's happening in the world, just with witches instead. Nathan is my little cuddle shark. Seriously I want to hug him for life well setting him on the world. And Gabriel, kind caring Gabriel. I'm so scared what Half Lost is going to do to these two. So bloody scared.

Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy(Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy #1) by Cassandra Clare **
Boring. Terrible. What was the point? The big problem with this is that wasn't Simon. There is no way another author is going to be able to write someone else's character like the original character. And this is case and point. This was a humourless personality lacking Simon.

Pucked(Pucked #1) by Helena Hunting ****(re-read)
Ready for the wedding of MC and Beaver? HAHAHA

Out of Frame(Out of Focus #3) by Megan Erickson ****
Erickson's Out of Focus series is a bunch of really good emotional and fun romances. Super swoony boys getting it on. What more could I ask for? Seriously. J.R. really stole the show in this one though. It's so hard to read about a person not able to be themselves because the world is an asshole. Poor guy hiding his sexuality from the public is just sad. But also adds a really strong element to the story. And Quinn is a super cutey. So highly recommend this series.

Dance With Me by Heidi Cullinan ****
Cullinan is another underrated author. Her stories are compelling and emotional and lovely. Dance With Me is no different. Ed and Laurie have a lot going on emotionally. Life changes are a coming. And what makes those scary moments better is finding each other and realizing that love can really sweeten the deal. I love Ed and Laurie. They're tender and adorable and human. Both guys aren't afraid to be themselves it's just getting there and being secure that really hit home. Apparently there is a novella to come and I cannot wait for even a tiny glimpse into their future.

Eight Ways to Ecstasy(Art of Passion #2) by Jeanette Grey **
Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with this book. In fact the writing is really good for a romance book even when the dialogue can get on the cheesy and eye rolly side. I just can't deal with Rylan or Kate. First off the insta-love is insane. In the first book she was thinking it after three days. Noooo. That's not love, that's lust. But this book just continues on the unrealistic love they feel for each other. There's also the fact that both of them use sex for the answer to everything. So needless to say that there was too much of it, which lead to me just skipping most the sex scenes. Than there's these two idiot characters. Kate is a hypocritical naive indecisive moron. Really nothing appealing about her. Rylan is a spoiled rich douche who gets frustrated over everything Kate says or when she doesn't accept his apologies right away. But no worries, sex will fix it, not you know talking like mature adults. I really could point out all his faults but really I'll just leave this with a few quotes and you'll get the point.
"It'd take more than a few orgasms for her to forgive me." loc 99
"I won't let it happen again." His finger slipped a little deeper beneath the cotton. "I'll eat you out every night and every day if you want me to." loc 192
"Please tell me I haven't fucked this up so bad you won't let me be inside you." loc 252

(Belated)Weekly Wrap-Up March 5th-11th

This week I manged to read five books. Well technically six... Three physical books; one an ARC. One audio And one e-book.

When We Collided by Emery Lord ****
I'm pretty sure that I won't get around to writing a full review for this one. Anyhow, When We Collided is a bit different than Lord's previous books. This one deals with mental illness and grief. I think I might have an unpopular opinion here, but(and I feel awful for feeling this way) I couldn't feel for Vivi. I know she's manic and it's hard to read about. But her larger than life and reckless attitude was too much for me. Josh I love. His grief is so real. And the strain of taking care of his younger siblings well his mother drowns in her heartbreak is both admirable and sad. I can see Vivi adds something new and different to his life, and she does help him start to heal. It's just that she also adds more worry to his life and I hated seeing that. Guys, I so feel for Vivi. It's not fair that anyone goes through that, it just doesn't mean I have to like her. When We Collided obviously comes from Lord's personal experience, it truly shows that she knows just how Vivi realistically feels.

Us(Him #2) by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy *****
Jamie and Wes are my life. Seriously. This book is everything. And also what I meant when I said I technically read six books because I read this one twice in a week. Well actually it might have been three times. I just couldn't deal when I finished the book. I need constant Jamie and Wes in my life. It was everything to see how their relationship had progressed since Him. It was interesting to see how there was a bit of roll reversal between the two of them and how they were feeling. Also I cried because of things. I have the paperback on its way to me now, so no doubt I'll be reading that baby when it shows up.

The Devil You Know by Trish Doller ****
Really decent YA thriller. I knew where it was going from page one. But that still didn't hinder my enjoyment in the story.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone(DoSaB #1) by Laini Taylor ****.5
I really need to read the last book, but first I need to re-read the first two books. Which I'm doing via audio and smart decision on my part. The narrator is AMAZING. Which I think has made me love the book a lot more this time around.

Better off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg ***.5
Cute best friends romance story. It did a really good job of showing teenage thinking; that self centered yet unsure way. Both characters did a great job of learning and growing. Ultimately though the story won't be remembered.

Showcase Sunday #100

Showcase Sunday is a weekly meme held by Books, Biscuits and Tea. It allows fellow bloggers to show off any books or bookish things they've compiled over the week.

So yea, took a bit of an unexpected break here. Not like I've been posting a lot this year anyhow. But like I mentioned before, my brain is currently unmotivated mush, which lead to a blogging slump. But I'm really wanting to get my ass back in to gear next month. Also figured I better post a haul before I drown in unhauled books. Although there's really not that many for a pile up of about a month.
I know I missed about three Weekly Wrap-Ups. So I think I'm just going to go ahead and post those this coming week and than try and get some reviews written. I'm not really good at discussions, but if there's anything you guys would want to see from me, just let me know. I'm really trying to think of a new bi-weekly or monthly feature to do. But I've yet to come up with something. Gotta get my creative juices flowing.

Purchased

The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord| Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
Yes I already own both of these in other editions. But TSoMaY has extra content(and is pretty). And Jamie is pretty. Sooooo
The Haters by Jesse Andrews| Amulet #7: Firelight by Kazu Kibuishi
Found The Haters out super early. I loved Me and Early and the Dying Girl, so let's hope I love this one too. I read/have the ARC of Amulet, so just needed the finish product.

Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell| Geek Drama by Holly Smale
Technically I received 50 copies of Kindred Spirits(long story). So if you want to pay for shipping I have a few copies to spare. Found Geek Drama at Chapters which was so surprising. Obviously I had to grab it up.
Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke| Yellow Brick War by Danielle Paige
Grabbed WPM for the signing I'm going to on Monday. But also I do want to read it. TBW was supposed to be the last book in the trilogy so I was excited to finally continue on. But of course I found out it's now going to be a series. :|
Rebel of the Sands by Alywn Hamilton
Also grabbed this for the signing on Monday. I'm also super excited to read it.

E-Books Purchased

The Wrong Side of Right by Jenn Marie Thorne

Of Orchids and Oranges

One day when my son was younger, he was eating a sliced orange and out of nowhere he said, “Seeing an orange like this convinces me there is a God.”

I was a bit shocked, in a pleasant way, by his observation. I told him I agreed, but we didn’t go on to have a deep philosophical or religious discussion. There was no need to. He had captured one of life’s little miracles and that was that.

I thought about that comment this morning as I stared into the heart of my pink orchid, which finally bloomed a day ago. I love the very center of the flower.
I marvel at its mysterious structure. To me, it looks as though the orchid has two curved “arms” that reach right out of the blossom, offering up the flower’s unique beauty and architecture.

So here  I have written 139 words trying to capture the flower’s miracle whereas my son did the same thing with the orange in eleven.

Enough said.
